Unplug it before you lift the plate

Microwave Turntable Not Spinning: Causes plus Free Checks and When to Call

A microwave turntable not spinning is usually one of four things.

The plate may be seated wrong. The roller track may be dirty. The turntable setting may be switched off, or the drive coupler may be worn. All four are free or cheap to check. A failed motor or control board is less common and belongs to a technician. Unplug the unit before you touch anything. If the plate stays still after the checks, call (907) 560-2682. A person answers and the estimate is free.

Quick answer: what to check first when the turntable stops

Work from easiest to hardest. Whirlpool, Samsung and the parts guides we read agree on the order.

  • Is the glass plate right side up and sitting on the hub?
  • Is anything stuck in the roller track under the plate?
  • Is the turntable setting switched off at the control panel?
  • Is the drive coupler in the center cracked or worn?

Whirlpool also notes that spinning promotes even heating. That some models do not rotate by design. Check your manual before assuming a fault.

Most likely causes of a microwave turntable that will not turn, ranked

Microwave plate not turning because it is seated wrong

If the plate is not seated on the support hub, it may not spin. Whirlpool says it can also thump or rumble. It must sit right side up and secure. A plate that was washed and put back is the usual culprit.

A dirty or blocked roller track

Samsung says a dirty track or ring can make the turntable stick. A grinding noise often comes with it. Debris or packaging under the plate does the same. Food and grease buildup is the most common cause in one repair company's guide.

Microwave turntable not rotating because the setting is off

Some models let you switch rotation off for large dishes. The button is labeled Turntable, Tray or Rotation, per one repair guide. Press it and listen for the motor.

A cracked microwave roller ring

The ring carries ball bearings or wheels so the plate turns smoothly. A cracked or warped ring drags or stops, per a parts guide. It is a cheap part and a safe swap.

A worn drive coupler

The coupler is the plastic piece connecting the motor shaft to the turntable. If it breaks or wears, the table stops even though the motor runs. Lift the plate and look at the center.

Microwave turntable motor failure

One parts guide names a defective drive motor as the most common cause of a truly stuck plate. It is internal. The same guide puts a healthy motor at about 40 ohms. A technician tests this with the unit unplugged and safely discharged.

A control board that never sends power

The board is the last suspect. A technician rules out everything else before blaming it.

Safe checks for a stuck microwave plate, in order

Everything below happens inside the cavity. Do not remove the outer cover. If the microwave turntable stuck problem returns, note when it happens. A worn microwave coupler is a small part to replace. Press on the plate to see whether the microwave coupler sits firmly on the motor shaft.

  1. Unplug the microwave for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  2. Remove the glass plate and the roller ring and look for cracks or chips.
  3. Wash the plate and ring in warm soapy water. Clean the track and the floor of the cavity, as Samsung advises.
  4. Inspect the drive coupler at the center for cracks or wear.
  5. Reseat the ring, then set the plate right side up on the hub.
  6. Press the turntable button if your model has one. Then run a cup of water for 30 seconds and watch the plate.

Signs to stop and call a technician

  • Sparks, a burning smell or a crackle: unplug the unit.
  • A humming motor with nothing turning after the checks.
  • A cracked coupler you cannot match to your model.
  • A dead display or a unit that will not start.

Do not open the outer cover. The CPSC warns against do-it-yourself repair and says shock is possible even when unplugged. One parts guide also warns that the high-voltage capacitor can cause severe injury or death. The microwave turntable motor is a technician part, so leave the cover on.

What a technician checks when a turntable will not move

A technician starts with the control panel. We listen for the relay click that shows the board is sending power. Next come the support ring, the coupler and the motor, which is tested for resistance. The control board comes last, only after the motor is confirmed to get no voltage.

All of this happens with the unit unplugged and the capacitor discharged. The cover has to come off to reach the motor from underneath.

Repair or replace a microwave with a dead turntable

Plates, rings and couplers are small parts. Replacing them is usually worth it on any working microwave. A motor is a larger repair. A control board on an old unit may not be. Age decides. One repair company puts a microwave's life at seven to ten years. We say plainly when microwave repair is not the right choice.

Keep the turntable turning

Wipe spills before they bake onto the track. One repair company says a heavy or off-center load strains the motor. It can also wear the coupler. Seat the plate every time you wash it. Keep the roller ring and the cavity floor clear.

The federal microwave rule that decides what a repair may touch

Scene. No dated Anchorage story covers microwave turntables. So the closest authoritative source is the federal rule 21 CFR 1030.10.

Problem. It requires at least two safety interlocks. It also limits leakage to 5 mW/cm2 once a microwave is sold.

Tension. The rule also says service procedures cannot disable the interlocks. So a repair must not defeat them.

What a careful technician does. The technician keeps the interlocks intact. We check the door and switches before closing the case.

Outcome. A turntable repair ends with the unit as safe as it was built.

Lesson. Free checks end at the plate and the plug.

Microwave turntable questions, including Anchorage ones

Why is my microwave turntable not spinning?

Usually the plate is seated wrong or the roller track is dirty. Otherwise the turntable setting is off or the drive coupler is worn. All four are free or cheap to check. A failed motor or control board is less common. Unplug the unit and work from the plate inward before you call.

Can I use a microwave with a turntable that won't turn?

The microwave still works. But food heats unevenly, which Whirlpool ties to the turntable's job. Stir and turn dishes by hand until it is fixed. Stop at once if you hear grinding, smell burning or see sparks, and unplug the unit.

Does every microwave turntable spin?

No. Whirlpool says some models do not rotate by design. Others let you switch rotation off for large dishes. Check the manual and the control panel before assuming the unit is broken. Look for a button labeled Turntable, Tray or Rotation.

Why is my microwave turntable thumping or grinding?

Thumping usually means the plate or roller ring is not seated on the hub. Grinding usually means debris in the track. That is per Whirlpool and Samsung. Remove the plate and clean the track and the cavity floor. Then reseat the parts right side up.

What do the roller ring and the coupler do?

The roller ring carries wheels or ball bearings so the plate turns smoothly. The coupler is the plastic piece that links the motor shaft to the plate. A cracked ring drags. A worn coupler lets the motor run while the plate sits still.

Is it worth replacing a turntable motor?

Often not on an old countertop unit. Often yes on a newer over-the-range or built-in model. Plates, rings and couplers are small parts and usually worth replacing. For Anchorage homes, a technician weighs age and model before suggesting a motor.

Can I replace the motor myself?

No. It means removing the outer cover and discharging the high-voltage capacitor. One parts guide says this can cause severe injury or death. The CPSC warns against do-it-yourself microwave repair. It says shock is possible even when the unit is unplugged. Leave the motor to a technician.
